Causes of embryo damage in test tube infants

The pathogenesis of embryo damage has not been completely clear. At present, it is believed that embryo damage is mainly related to the following factors:

01. Chromosomal abnormality: no matter sperm or egg, as long as the chromosome carrying genetic material is abnormal, even if a fertilized egg is formed, the embryo will not develop normally.


02. Maternal factors: for example, maternal pregnancy with serious systemic diseases, abnormal reproductive organs (uterine malformation, too thin or thick endometrium, intrauterine adhesion), endocrine disorders, traumatic shock, etc. will affect the development of embryos.



03. Abnormal immune function: the embryo or fetus in pregnancy is actually allogeneic transplantation, because the fetus is a combination of parents' genetic material and the mother cannot be exactly the same. The immune maladjustment between the mother and the fetus causes the rejection of the mother to the fetus. The common autoimmune diseases are systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, dermatomyositis and so on. Or reproductive immunity, such as carrying some kind of antibody, which affects the development of embryos, or anti endometrial antibody, anti ovarian antibody, anti chorionic gonadotropin antibody.


04. Environmental factors: the change of physiological state during pregnancy has greatly changed the mother's absorption, distribution and excretion of therapeutic drugs and various environmental harmful substances. In the early stage of development, the embryo is extremely sensitive to the influence of therapeutic drugs and environmental factors. At this time, various harmful factors can cause embryo damage or even loss. For example, excessive exposure to chemicals and bad living habits such as smoking, alcoholism, coffee, drugs, and some drugs affect early embryonic development.


05. Male factor: at present, more and more attention is paid to the abortion caused by male factor. Pregnancy is not a matter for the woman alone, and the male factor can not be ignored. Studies have confirmed that high DNA fragment rate of sperm can lead to abortion.



During IVF assisted pregnancy, routine examination has involved most of the above reasons for embryo damage, which can be handled in time when abnormalities are found. For patients with chromosomal abnormalities, the third-generation IVF technology can also be selected to avoid the transfer of embryos with known abnormal causes and reduce the incidence of fetal suspension. In general, IVF technology can reduce the incidence of embryo damage to a certain extent, But it cannot be completely avoided.


There is a problem of fetal suspension. Patients need to actively find the cause of fetal suspension, and then treat the symptoms. In addition to using drugs or surgical abortion to deal with aborted embryos, we should also consider doing chromosome examination of embryos.
